So I asked why they wanted it... what were their goals for it. The first answers were all about documentation for pay raises and recognition of good performers. But like so many of us, there had been little thought about the actual value to the organization, just some appraisal assumptions. There is no legal requirement for performance appraisals. There is good research that shows annual appraisals do not enhance performance. A good performance management system, of course, is far more than an annual appraisal. It involves setting of expectations, on-going feedback of actual performance, coaching and counseling, immediate acts to resolve problems, and terminating employment for poor performers. It may include some form of periodic appraisals tied to the needs of the organization and the individual.

Those offering half day or full day cuts in scheduled worktime usually use a compressed work week schedule such as four 10-hour days or some combination of shorter lunch hours and longer work hours for a 4.5 day week. You still have time to try this over the summer. And it can be a great way to test how flexible work options help your organization be more effective.
